In two words the colour system is how the colour "sounds" in the language of numbers. People whose profession is connected with graphics should know the basic colour models and how they are applied in practice. In web design, everything should be ordered and systematized, and choosing the right colour is not an exception.

RGB is the most commonly used colour model in web design. Any colour can be obtained by mixing three basic colours: red, green and blue. With the advent of computers, colours were assigned as eight-(classic RGB) and hexadecimal (HEX) value, where each shade can be displayed numerically. The hexadecimal colour system is more often used in the field of web design. HEX colour is nothing more than RGB hexadecimal representation. Colours are represented as three groups of hexadecimal digits, where each group is responsible for its own colour. In 112233, where 11 is red, 22 is green, 33 is blue and all values must be between 00 and FF. If each of the three groups contains the same characters, for example, #112233, then they can be written as # 123. All major browsers support RGB colour values. At the same time, the display of a colour will depend on the hardware of the device: in other words, the picture will look different on various monitors.

Recently, modern browsers have learned to work with the RGBA colour model - an RGB extension with support for an alpha channel, which determines the opacity of an object. The RGBA colour value is specified as rgba (red, green, blue, alpha). Alpha is a number ranging from 0.0 (fully transparent) to 1.0 (fully opaque).

The HSL colour model is a cylindrical representation of the RGB model. It represents colours in more intuitive and recognizable way than typical RGB. The model is often used in graphics applications, in colour pickers, and for image analysis. HSL stands for hue, saturation, lightness.

The CMYK colour model is often associated with colour printing. CMYK, as opposed to RGB, is a subtractive model, which means that higher values are associated with darker colours. The colours are determined by the ratio of Cyan(blue-green), Magenta, Yellow and adding black hue. CMYK is used for standard process (full colour) printing, which has a much smaller set of shades than the RGB model.

Each of the numbers that define a colour in CMYK represents the percentage of ink of a particular colour that makes up a colour combination.
These are the main color models, that are most often used among developers, designers and webmasters. When preparing an image for posting on a web resource, the RGB color model is used, and for printing - CMYK. And our handy Color Converter will help you easily convert one system to another.
