How to

Are you looking for an internal chat server with all of the collaborative tools you require?
Rocket.chat might be the best option for you. Find out how simple it is to use Univention Corporate Server to deploy.

You’ve created a virtual machine of your Univention Corporate Server and are wondering what you can do with it.
One option you might explore is deploying Rocket.chat for internal usage only. It could be a huge advantage for your firm.
That would be a fantastic method to keep internal discussions internal and avoid having to worry about sensitive material or topics being discussed on a third-party service.

Why Rocket.chat?

Rocket.chat is an outstanding, open-source chat server solution that includes features like:

  • Pop-up chat
  • In-app messaging
  • Notifications
  • Targeted emails
  • Customization
  • Team inbox
  • Lead development
  • File sharing
  • Mobile applications
  • Search
  • Third-party integrations
  • Audio/video conferencing

Why not Rocket.chat, is the actual question. The only reason you might not want to take this route is if you’re content with your current chat service. Let’s get to the deployment now that that’s out of the way.

How to deploy Rocket.chat with UCS

Go to your UCS server installation’s web page and log in using the administrator user (which is literally, administrator). When the database populates, click on the App Center icon, click CONTINUE (when requested), and search for Rocket.chat (if this is your first time in the App Center).
Typically, a reboot will resolve the issue. Before you can properly use the App Center, you may need to first visit the Software update module.

Click Mail & Messaging in the left sidebar and you should see the Rocket.chat entry.

Rocket.chat is ready to install on your UCS instance.

Click the Rocket.chat icon and then, in the resulting window, click INSTALL.

If you haven’t previously done so, you’ll need to activate your UCS instance before proceeding with the installation (which is as simple as entering an email, waiting for the license key to arrive and uploading the license key to the server).

It should just take a few minutes to complete the installation. When it’s finished, click MANAGE INSTALLATION.
The admin username and rocket.chat password will then be required to log in.
The setup wizard (Figure C), which leads you through the admin information, organizational information, server information, and server registration, will be required right away.

You’ll be directed to your Rocket.chat instance after completing the setup wizard, where you may further handle your new deployment (branding, user management, etc.) or start chatting with your peers.

Hence that’s all there is to Rocket.chat deployment via Univention Corporate Server. This is about as straightforward an approach as you’ll discover for acquiring access to an internal collaboration platform.
